It’s official: Capcom have officially gone off the deep end.

A trailer for the new DLC for the Xbox One exclusive launch title, Dead Rising 3 was shown off during Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conference and it is, for lack of a better word, insane, in the best possible sense. The zombie-mashing sandbox series is well-known for taking everything in stride but the new DLC takes appears to take comic fandom to a new level.

The trailer opens with Dead Rising 3 protagonist Nick Ramos approaching a Super Street Fighter IV arcade machine. A booming voice excitedly announces “Here comes a new challenger!”. The challengers in question are Anne, Chuck Green and Frank West - all of whom are returning heroes from across the Dead Rising franchise… only this time they’re cosplaying as characters from various Capcom games. The cosplays shown off were for Mike Haggar (Final Fight), B.B Hood and Felicia (Darkstalkers), Ryu and Chun Li (Street Fighter) and many others.

The rest of the trailer shows off the characters laying waste to the undead in 4 player online co-op , with new super moves, power ups and bonus stages. The montage is rounded out by a silly slow-motion sequence and the reveal of the official name for the DLC, Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition Ex Plus Alpha. We appreciate Capcom’s self-deferential humor, especially as they just released Ultra Street Fighter IV on the heels of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Version 2012 . In this case though, it’s hard to tell where the joke truly begins.

The DLC is out now to commemorate Capcom’s 31st anniversary. You’ll forgive us is we just refer to it as “the new Dead Rising DLC”. If for some reason you own an Xbox One and haven’t given Dead Rising 3 a look, you may want to reconsider as it has a wealth of content to experience.
