Last month, Future plc announced that it was considering closing several of its subsidiary websites, including computerandvideogames.com, putting all of its staff on consultation and focusing its attention on Gamesradar, a much larger US-based brand.
After witnessing the community support for CVG following their initial announcement, Future has now decided to re-evaluate their plans. CVG staff have been informed that their writing team will be reduced to three from a current staff of five full-time writers in the UK. The site has access to additional resources both in the US and Australia, but it is unclear if these resources will be reduced as well. After the staff numbers have been cut, Future will review where CVG stands this coming December.
Another reason Future may have reconsidered CVG’s fate is that many different media brands have tried to acquire CVG, perhaps hinting to Future that it does have a good thing on its hands, after all.
It’s also unclear as to whether or not Edge-Online or any of Future plc’s official online magazine sites have been removed from the chopping block in a kind of “wait and see” attitude until CVG has been reevaluated at the end of the year.
Our thoughts are with all the staff affected by this move, and we hope that they are able to find alternative employment soon.
