Activision and Treyarch have released the first official gameplay trailer for this year’s Call of Duty game, Black Ops 3.
Black Ops 3‘s existence had been one of the worst-kept secrets of the last few weeks. Last week, the publisher released a live-action teaser which provoked debate due to its perceived similarities to videos created by Square Enix to promote Deus Ex: Human Revolution, prompting even Square Enix Montreal to make fun of the video with a cat meme on Twitter.
Like last year’s Advanced Warfare, which was created by Sledgehammer, Black Ops 3 is set in the future with a distinct sci-fi vibe. Set around 60 years from now, Black Ops 3‘s world is a future where cybernetic prosthetics are common place. Of course, this being Call of Duty, there’s a big bad man determined to cause instability and start a war.
In the trailer, which you can view below, we see a few examples of just how those advances in cybernetics will affect gameplay. The player character’s arm transforms into a gun, while mechs and robot soldiers patrol war-torn streets.
Meanwhile, if you thought Advanced Warfare had more than a whiff of Respawn’s Titanfall about it, then Black Ops 3 is likely to raise more than just an eyebrow. Wall-running, powerslides and giant stompy robots means that, on first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re watching a trailer for Titanfall 2.
On the plus side, the trailer is set to The Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black, so even though Black Ops 3 isn’t scoring high in the originality department, someone at Activision at least has good taste in music.
Here’s the trailer and the first official screenshots:
