Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be released this year, publisher 2K has announced today.
In development as a joint effort between Gearbox Software and 2K Australia, the game is set between the events of the first two games (hence the name) and sees players romping around on Pandora’s moon and engaging in Low-gravity jetpack combat, because jetpacks make everything instantly better. There’s also a new elemental type of damage called Cryo, and a new class of weapon - the laser.
Interestingly, players will be taking on the role of one of 4 henchman, fighting alongside Handsome Jack - the villain from the second game - as he tries to build up the Hyperion Corporation. Apparently, we’ll witness his downfall into scum and villainy.
The character classes that have been revealed are (as according to the announcement):
Athena, the Gladiator: Uses her Kinetic Aspis, which is a shield that can absorb incoming damage, then convert it back into energy to use against enemies. Athena made her debut in The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC for the first Borderlands game.
Wilhelm, the Enforcer: Wilhelm was previously seen in Borderlands 2 as one of the first deadly bosses in the game.
Nisha, the Lawbringer: The sheriff of Lynchwood from Borderlands 2, Nisha will be dealing out her own brand of justice, which we’ll discuss further in the coming months.
Claptrap, the Fragtrap: Wait - Claptrap? The goofy robot companion from Borderlands 2, now playable for the first time? Fragtrap is his character class? Well, you can play him too!
Yes, you heard that right - we can now play as Claptrap - news which has instantly shot the game to the top of our most-wanted list. I mean, who doesn’t want to play as a 3-foot tall robot with a single wheel for transport?
To go with the announcement, 2K has released a video showing off some of the new features.
Claptrap! With a giant gun!
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be released this Fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Sadly, no next-gen version is planned, so if you’ve already packed your old consoles away, you might want to hang on to them a bit longer before taking them down your local second-hand shop.
Claptrap! With a giant gun! As a playable character!
We rather enjoyed Borderlands 2. Guest reviewer Tiny Tina scored it 10/10, remarking that “Boderlands 2 is the best awesomesause you’ll ever see! It’s like a fridge full of the stuff. You open the door lookin for a drink and BAM! There it is! The sauce of the most awesome awesome you’ll ever taste!”
