The Borderlands series is pretty great, so much so that it makes Gearbox’s mistakes - such as Aliens: Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever - feel like blips.
Borderlands 2 got a 10/10 from this very site, and we don’t give those out lightly; and Jodie thought rather highly of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, even though it didn’t really do much to move the series on from established roots.
So when I heard that Borderlands: The Handsome Collection has a 16GB day one patch on Xbox One, my first thought was: “Did they forget to put the game on the disc?”
As it turns out, they almost did. While the disc does contain both Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel, Claptrap’s Claptastic Voyage - a DLC campaign for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - wasn’t completed early enough to be included on The Handsome Collection, so Gearbox has instead decided to roll it out as a day one patch for the game. PS4 owners get off a little bit lightly, however - their mandatory patch weighs in at “just” 8.9gb.
To be fair to Gearbox and publisher 2K, that isn’t all that’s included in the mandatory patch; alongside the DLC, there’s a multitude of bug-fixes for both the PS4 and the Xbox One. Marion Dreo – spokesperson for Gearbox – said “we strongly recommend that all players download it before playing The Handsome Collection.“
On the bright side, with the PS4’s latest firmware update, you can just put your console to sleep and walk away while the patch downloads.
I’m not a fan of having to update games before I can play them, especially when they’re liable to take hours to download, but I can’t really complain in this case. Gearbox didn’t have to give me that DLC. They could have just offered it as another expansion, and I would have bought it - because I’m a sucker.
Well, Gearbox doesn’t think you’re a sucker. They think you’re a cool guy who deserves to stuff another expansion pack into the game that you just bought, apparently. Honestly, I don’t even know how it fits. It’s like a Borderlands of Holding.
