Borderlands 3 Confirmed, Coming To Current-Gen Only

During an earnings call yesterday, Take-Two officially confirmed Borderlands 3, currently in development by Gearbox. They also confirmed that 2K Games would be publishing the game, just like they published the previous Borderlands titles.

Additionally, they revealed that the game would be released on current-gen consoles only. You can expect Borderlands 3 to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, unlike Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the latest installment in the franchise, which launched on last-gen consoles last year. The latest entry in the series doesn’t have a projected release date at the moment, but 2016 seems like a safe bet.

No word yet on whether the playable characters on offer in this latest game will be all-new, or if there’s going to be a mix of old and new. It seems likely that some characters will return though, even if only in a story capacity - the series has a tendency to feature protagonists from previous games as a little nostalgia-hit for the fans. Personally, it would be great to see the roster expanded to included all previous playable protagonists, alongside a smattering of new ones. Imagine the replay value! And with the more powerful hardware on the latest iterations of PlayStation and Xbox, there should be scope to increase the number of players in online co-op.

No release date or additional details were announced, but we’ll update you when we hear more. In the meantime, you have Borderlands: The Handsome Collection to look forward to. The Handsome Collection will launch on March 24 on PS4 and Xbox One and includes remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as well as all add-on content. Sadly, the original Borderlands isn’t included. While it’s undoubtedly the weakest title in the series, it’s still a blast to play.

We’ll be sure to bring you more details as soon as we have them. With a number of Borderlands fans on the Continue Play team - Jenna is trying to contain her excitemement at the announcement-we-all-knew-was-coming, we’re going to be keeping a close eye on the title as it gets further into development.
