Bioware, the developer behind the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises has teased a new horror IP in the live action “Nightmare” trailer.
A select number of fans received an email with a link to a website, youve-been-chosen.com, revealing the live action teaser.
The 40 second trailer starts with a broken lamp, panning up to a man unconscious in bed. The scene changed to a man running through an alleyway - he notices a bike on the floor. There are several identical bikes throughout the alley in the same toppled position.
He approaches a car, frantically trying the door; it’s locked.
The scene changes to a suited man, relaxed with one ankle resting on his knee. His head is made of a thick, black smoke.
We look back to the car. There is a man in the driver seat. He is wearing the same hoody as the panicking man. He looks up in contempt. We see the panicking man’s face; it is made of light.
He wake up, thrashing, retreating back up to the headboard. His partner runs forward to check on him.
The URL flashes on-screen, asking us “what really happens when we sleep?”
Scrolling down the page we are informed that “the time is near.”
“They are watching. Your power is rising. Cologne, Germany. You’ve Been Chosen.”
There also appears to an ARG running along with the teaser, giving more clues to the game; there are police reports for a missing person named Henna Caplin, as well as a website for the fictional college, the Woods-Watson Institute of Higher Learning which seem to be tied into the teaser.
This certainly doesn’t look like anything Bioware has mentioned before. One possibility is that it’s the result of the developer’s collaboration with FailBetter Games, the company behind Fallen London. There is no doubt that we’ll likely hear more about this IP at Gamescom, also held in Cologne, in a couple of weeks. We will bring you more information as we get it.
