Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s Dead Kings DLC is out today

Dead Kings, the oh-no-it-isn’t, oh-yes-it-is free DLC for the bealeagured Assassin’s Creed: Unity, is available today on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4.

Originally, Dead Kings was set to come with a price tag. However, the widely-reported problems with Ubisoft Montreal’s latest take on the historical stab-em-up series led to the publisher announcing it would be free for all players. The DLC adds a new mini-campaign to Unity set in a new area roughly one-fourth of the size of Paris, making it significantly larger than the main game’s starting area of Versailles.

In Dead Kings, protagonist Arno finds himself spending the bulk of his time in the maze-like catacombs of Franciade during the campaign’s 2-3 hour running time. Once you’ve completed the story missions, there’s the usual wealth of collectibles and side-activities to work through. All in all then, Dead Kings is a rather meaty addition to the main game - and at the grand price of absolutely nothing, there’s no reason not to play it if you picked up Unity last year.

Yours truly reviewed Unity for Continue Play, but found it to be underwhelming after the excellent Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in 2013.

“Some of its constituent parts show promise, but are relegated to the sidelines. Other parts that have long been staples of the series are now locked behind increasingly obtrusive barriers,” I wrote in my Assassin’s Creed: Unity Review. “The overriding sense is that Assassin’s Creed has lost its way, and Ubisoft needs to do something pretty impressive next year if it wants to convince us that the series still has what it takes to remain in the big leagues.”

Details of this year’s Assassin’s Creed game were leaked last month. Subtitled Victory, it sees the game moving from Revolution-era France to the cobbled streets of Victorian London - complete with fog, duels on top of horse carriages, and, with a little luck, classic period figures like Jack the Ripper. Hopefully it turns out better than Unity, which was a disappointment all round.

We’ll have our review of Dead Kings ready in the next few days. In the meantime, check out the launch trailer below.
