Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is out today on PS4, and Xbox One. It should unlock on Xbox Live and PSN within the next couple of hours. The Steam version, meanwhile, is currently due to unlock tomorrow.

Set in 16th century China, the first installment in a planned trilogy of Chronicles titles has you playing as Shao Jun, a Chinese assassin set on a path of vengeance for her fallen Chinese Brotherhood of Assassins. Developed by Climax Studios with the help of Ubisoft Montreal, ACC: China is the first addition to two more Chronicles titles, set in locations such as Russia and India.

Unlike the main series, this spin-off game is set as a 2D side scrolling adventure title. Stylized with traditional Chinese brush strokes, the game has you exploring historical locations such Maijishan Grottoes, Port of Macau, The Forbidden City and The Great Wall, and there is a greater emphasis on stealth compared to traditional Assassin’s Creed games.

Each Chronicles game is set for $10 USD upon release. People that have purchased Assassins Creed Unity’s Season Pass will be able to pick ACC: China for free, as this game was intended for the season pass collection.

Since release Assassin’s Creed Unity has been subject to some of the harshest criticisms of any game in 2014, in what many saw as an unfinished game. In an apology for the game’s poor performance, Ubisoft cancelled the planned season pass and going on a PR offensive in a bid to win back consumer trust - even going as far as releasing previously-premium DLC for free and giving consumers who had purchased the pass a choice of free game.

Dale reviewed Unity when it was released, giving it an above-average 6/10 and praising the visuals and the detail of Revolutionary Paris, but criticizing the narrative and the amount of bugs. “The overriding sense is that Assassin’s Creed has lost its way,” Dale wrote in his Assassin’s Creed Unity review. “Ubisoft needs to do something pretty impressive next year if it wants to convince us that the series still has what it takes to remain in the big leagues.”
