There’s a certain mysticism about Japan’s noted district of Akihabara. Affectionately known as “Electric Town” and shorthanded to “Akiba,” it’s the home of the Japanese love story/legend Densha Otoko, the base of an entire team of superheroes (Japan’s Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger, an officially-sanctioned parody of the franchise that birthed Power Rangers), and has a legacy as a gamer mecca. One PSP title that came out in 2011, Akiba’s Trip, featured adventures in the hardware haven, but didn’t make an appearance in the United States.
XSEED Games has decided to treat gamers to a tour of the district with Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed. An English-translation of Akiba’s Trip 2, developed by ACQUIRE Corp., the title will be coming to both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita this summer.
We’ll peel back the layers of this game (you didn’t just think it would be a harmless tour of Japan, did you?); young Nanashi must face off against the vampiric Synthisters, deceptive creatures that thrive on the local otaku’s drive for social life and will to live. To defeat them, he must expose them to sun, which requires clothing to be ripped off. As the creatures look just like humans, it means you have to run around the realistically-modeled town, identifying and then fighting the threats until you can expose them to the rays of the sun like a reverse Superman. Yes, you strip them. You didn’t catch the pun in the title? “Akiba’s Trip” can also be read as “Akiba Strip”…
ACQUIRE Corp. is behind Tenchu, Way Of The Samurai, and Shinobido series, amongst other smaller games. While the first game won’t be coming to America, Undead & Undressed is reportedly a standalone story, not requiring the original to play. The game has not yet been rated by the ESRB or priced, but the trailer mentions that they expect a Mature rating. Additionally, there’s no word on the DLC that was released in Japan being made available, which featured characters from Hyperdimension Neptunia, Genshiken, and more Japanese franchises.
