American video game publishers Activision are making plans to potentially open their own movie studios in order to turn big-name games into blockbusters.
The Information has made claims that multiple sources have told them that the publishing giants are planning to open an entertainment wing in order to work on films and television shows based on their hit brands, such as Call of Duty and Skylanders. The phrase on a lot of people’s minds is “a Marvel-style hit factory”, which would mean that the publisher can make exactly what it wants to, rather than putting their trust into other people.
Of course, the plans won’t be able to go ahead without the say-so of CEO Bobby Kotick, who’s apparently still scouting round for the “necessary executive talent”. Kotick himself has never been a massive fan of videogame movies; he once said in an interview with The New York Times that he had very little interest in making a Call of Duty movie and that “movies based on video games rarely please devoted fans and could taint the brand.”
Of course, Activision wouldn’t be the first publishers to open up a studio; Ubisoft did the same in 2011 and went on to announce movie versions of their hit franchises Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell. Keeping a film in-house also means that a lot of creative control is allowed to the publisher, which can be difficult to contain if the film is shipped out to a third party.
