After a rocky and decidedly ugly downhill slide during the Duke Nukem Forever fiasco in the late 2000’s, developer 3D Realms shut their doors back in 2007. Though the ensuing years were scattered with off-and-on again legal battle over the rights to Duke Nukem Forever and claims of unpaid royalties, we didn’t see anything else coming out of, what was by then a defunct studio.
In a press release issued today, 3D Realms announced that it’s back in business. Original dev team members Scott Miller and Bryan Turner are on board, as well as new names to the developer, CEO Mike Nielson of coolshop.com (biggest game distributor in Scandinavia), and VP Frederik Schreiber, CEO of Interceptor Entertainment.
That’s pretty cool in its own right, but apparently 3D Realms is prepared to take us all on a whirlwind tour of the 90’s video game scene with a massive anthology.
Yep - we can get this 32 game collection filled with all those classics (and some not-so-classic) from our childhood’s, and for the next 48 hours, it’s only $19.99 - that works out at around £12.50 if you’re in the UK. Even the regular sale price of $39.99 is pretty good, considering what you get for it. Don’t worry about needing to run a virtual machine, either, as 3D Realms has indicated that the games will run through a special launcher built to run on Windows. It sounds like they’ve done all the hard work, which is great because we can’t wait to re-live those Duke Nukem days without fiddling around trying to run an old program on new Windows.
It’s all DRM-free and has “partial controller support.” That’s a little vague so I can’t really tell you what is supported, what isn’t, and what is sort’ve supported.
The only things 3D Realms left out was Max Payne and Prey - the rights to those are in the hands of Rockstar and Bethesda - though for what you get at the 48-hour sale price, that’s not a bad trade.
