Editor’s Blog: We want you!

It’s been a busy few months here at Continue Play.

Firstly, we relaunched at the beginning of March with a major redesign. Then, we started ramping up our efforts to get new young and talented writers on board. Heather, Tim, Peter, Noah et al have done some amazing work for us so far, and we’re sure that will continue.

Originally, CP was started as nothing more than a personal portfolio blog. As time went on, we grew… and grew… and grew. We now have over 25 people on our team, and we’re a registered limited company with a clear vision for what we want to achieve in the months and years ahead.

Yes, we actually looked like this, once upon a time.

We’re not done though - not by a long shot. We’re currently working to reposition ourselves as a gaming site focused on helping young and aspiring writers to gain a foothold in the industry. We’ve been gradually rolling out a major enrollment program, looking to bring on board the best and brightest young writers so that we can train them up and give them the skills, support and training they need to gain a foothold in an industry that is notoriously difficult to enter into.

We’ve also approached local politicians and national charities, with a view to obtaining grant funding that will allow us to become a site dedicated to providing work experience to aspiring young writers. Many of our existing writers came to us with no prior experience, but have since grown to become excellent writers with a bright future. The young gamers of today are the gaming journalists of tomorrow. With that in mind, we’re throwing our gates open.

Do you love games? Do you love talking about games? Do you consider yourself a good writer? Are you young (25 and under) and willing to learn? Can you work well as part of a team, and work under your own motivation?

If you can answer “yes” to all of those questions, then drop us a line. While we welcome submissions from all over the world, right now we are particularly focused on people in the United Kingdom. If you want to be considered for a writing position, then please email us via [email protected]. We require that you provide 3 samples, one of which should be a review of a game you have recently played. Check your submissions thoroughly for grammar and spelling errors prior to sending. The brightest and best will then receive an invitation to an interview.

As with any start up business, revenue is thin on the ground right now, but we really think that we can change that. We have a lot of plans that will help us to both bring in an income to the site and enable us to further support our writing staff. We’re passionate about gaming, we’re passionate about writing about gaming, and we really want CP to become a place where up-and-coming writers can hone their skills.

We can’t provide pay right now. We’re not going to lie about that. Too many sites make promises about pay that they can’t keep, and we’re determined not to become part of that group. What we can provide however is experience, tutoring, industry contacts, letters of reference, and plenty of support. All we ask is that you’re able to provide two articles per week as a minimum - those could be news pieces, reviews, features or anything else.

In return, we will do everything we can to support you. Forget Spider-Man‘s J Jonah Jameson - we’re not like that. We know that editors in any sector of journalism have something of an intimidating reputation. We pride ourselves on the fact that we work around people’s personal obligations. We’re not about to start making demands, and if our requirements interfere with your studies, personal relationships or other things, let us know - we are happy to come to an understanding.

We also know that too many young people feel abandoned. Youth unemployment is a global problem; coming out of the global recession, many of you may be concerned about whether or not you have the skills or experience necessary to obtain gainful employment. Many of you may also feel as though the system has let you down. We want to help you to improve yourselves and your prospects. We can’t guarantee a paid job - at least not at the moment - but we are willing to work with you to build essential skills that are transferable to a number of different industries.

You’re passionate about gaming. We’re passionate about gaming. Continue Play is here to help you gain the skills and experience you need to help you get ahead.

If you love games, and want to write about games, then get in touch. We want to hear from you.
