Yesterday at Sony’s E3 stage show Media Molecule announced LittleBigPlanet 3 for the PlayStation 3 and 4, coming later this November.

No longer will players be limited to just sack boys and girls. as three new characters have moved into the Space Pod to join in on adventures. There is the four legged Odd Sock who uses her enhance speed to quickly dodge through traps and activate timed puzzles. Odd Sock appears to be a sock dog and will be the constant companion on any planet or moon.

Then we were introduced to Toggle, who towers over all the sock people with his great height and weight. Toggle can use his immense strength to move larger objects, and his mass can activate pressure switches. To go along with his name, Toggle can “toggle” between Tiny Toggle and Tall Toggle to help navigate smaller areas.

Finally, there is Swoop - a bird-like sock who, along with her extra speed, can also fly without the need of a jet pack. Swoop is able to maneuver through the skies and reach never before reachable places on the planet. She can also carry and of the party members as well as objects to help complete puzzles or a player having a difficult go at a jump.

Not to be outdone, Sack boys and girls have also gained a few new tricks up their sleeves, one of which is the ability to climb objects. In the live demo we saw a sackboy climb up a fence that was in the background as well as grab onto a ledge when he misses a jump.

Using all four of the sack characters will create extra layers of gameplay and puzzle design throughout the game. We were shown many puzzles with multiple solutions, and level can be navigated by each of the characters in their own way. Media Molecule hopes to create an even greater variety of multiplayer gameplay when teaming up with friends online.

This wouldn’t be a LittleBigPlanet game without new power ups of course. Featured in the stage demo was the Pumpinator!, a pump action air gun that is used to push far away objects. Thanks to the power of the PlayStation 4, Little Big Planet will also have a greater level of 3D depth than ever before, allowing for more complex puzzles and level design.

Speaking of level design, LittleBigPlanet 3 will be using an overhauled content creation tool, to ease new players in the creation of levels and objects. However, now players will be able to customize their characters by creating their own wearable objects and tools. It is unclear if the ability to generate clothing and costumes is in the tool, but it was shown to be attaching items to the sock people.

Sony was also proud to announce that over 8.7mil unique user generated levels had been created between LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, and that every single level will be available with updated graphics for play directly through Little Big Planet 3 with no need for disk swapping.

Here is a look at both the live E3 demo and the announcement trailer.

Enjoy
