Minecraft is, to say the least, something of an international phenomenon. Its simplicity (both visually and mechanically) as well as its accessibility masks what is actually a pretty deep toolset that - in the right hands - can be used to create virtually anything. The potential is practically endless - with mods, servers, games and far more to be explored outside of the core game mechanics. A large reason for the game’s success, of course, is down to the player community, and the dedication and talent that has gone into creating some truly impressive structures.
The main idea behind the creative mode in Minecraft is that you have an endless supply of blocks which you can place down to create anything you want from a simple hut to a gargantuan citadel. With enough time and imagination, practically anything you can imagine can be recreated in-game, and of course plenty of people have done just that. There have been hundreds, if not thousands of truly mind-boggling creations put forward by the community and to list them all would take a lifetime; but here’s some of the very best we’ve come across.
5. Greenfield by THEJESTR
Deemed the “most realistic city in Minecraft“, Greenfield was originally conceived by a team of builders calling themselves THEJESTR over two years ago, who continue to expand the impressive city week by week with more builders being added to the team. This hugely expansive world delivers some nigh-on perfect realism in terms of how the city is set out, the look of the buildings, the roads that connect them all and so much more.
What makes it so amazing?
To be able to even visualize and plan this all out is a massive feat, but it’s one that THEJESTR was happy to take on, and the team has carried it off immaculately. The variety of buildings on display shows that this wasn’t a simple copy/paste job, with each structure built and designed by hand. Greenfield boasts a whole range of large-scale venues (stadiums, etc), as well as underground secrets to be found via the sewer system. The detail is truly endless.
4. 8-Track Music Sequencer by Disco
If you are an avid Minecraft player and you haven’t already heard of the famed Australian redstone-genius Disco, then we’re not entirely sure where you have been living the past few years. His brain is even rumored to be powered by redstone due to the shear madness his devices must ensue when he is constructing them.
Over the years, he has made everything from an in-game playable guitar to this - an 8 track music sequencer that allows you to customize over 1024 notes in over 8 controllable channels.
What makes it so amazing?
It’s a working music sequencer.
In Minecraft.
Have you ever tried creating an in-real-life object within a game, copying its exact mechanics and functions, whilst making it simultaneously look gorgeous? Pretty difficult, isn’t it? Well Disco not only tried, he succeeded - time and time again. We can’t begin to imagine the amount of planning and work that went into making something as complicated as this, but we’re sure as hell glad it exists.
3. Jouki Steampunk Japan by Murps
Murps has never ceased to impress the community with his intricate builds, and Jouki is possibly hi most jaw-dropping work - a huge sophisticated citadel floating in the sky with a blend of Japanese and steampunk influence which results in a place only the gods would have been blessed enough to live in. Fully-furnished rooms, docking platforms for the airships, floating lights, cloud paths and an entire network of foliage and trees are just some of the features of this monstrously big city.
What makes it so amazing?
To have the level of imagination required to think up of the various parts and ideas of this build is impressive enough. To single-handedly create such a beautiful project with this level of detail in such a short time is nothing short of remarkable. You can easily spend over an hour exploring each nook and cranny of this aerial masterpiece, and still find new things that that will surprise you.
2. Cloud Haven by Lynchyinc
Taking the idea of a floating city to the other extreme is Cloud Haven, with a flying citadel which shows you how a real fully-functioning city could run in such a tight and confined space. It’s all powered thanks to the working engines you can find in its hull. This build was also single-handedly created by Lynchyinc, a seasoned builder, after being inspired by his obsession with steampunk world-building.
What makes it so amazing?
It’s a rarity to see such originality when it comes to Minecraft builds, especially one which comes with a detailed backstory, a set of running motors and some plenty of secrets waiting to be found. Lynchyinc even took the time to add a surrounding environment for the ship, with large fluffy clouds and small floating islands adding that much more pizzazz to the build as a whole.
1. Eldaria Islands by Aurelien_Sama
Aurelien is considered a terraforming god throughout the Minecraft community for his incandescent style and originality, as well as the magnificent scenes he somehow manages to produce using a variety of tools on a truly massive scale. Eldaria is arguably his most celebrated creation, spanning an area exceeding 3100 blocks squared with over 5 different biomes and a hand-crafted terrain with ores, villages and much more to explore. Think of it as a normal Minecraft map, but with some of the most impressive scenery you will ever have the pleasure of seeing in the game.
What makes it so amazing?
It’s hard to think how long this entire project must have taken Aurelien, considering how varied and diverse the terrain is from island to island. He even includes some more specific terrain details such as waterfalls and volcanoes, each lovingly - and painstakingly - detailed. It is arguably the greatest piece of terraforming you will ever have the pleasure of seeing in Minecraft.
