Frontier Developments has announced a series of new expansions for Elite: Dangerous.
Yes, that’s right: expansions, plural. Frontier says that a whole season of major gameplay expansions are planned, falling under the Horizons banner.
The first expansion to be announced, Planetary Landings, will finally allow players to explore the surface of planets, a feature that’s been long-awaited since the game first launched in December of last year. After scanning planets and moons for crashed ships, minerals and fortresses, you’ll be able to explore the surface using a new vehicle: the Scarab.
“Alone or with friends players will explore, mine and engage hostile forces as they attempt to infiltrate strongholds guarding valuable rewards. Players will explore new worlds, coasting over mountaintops, diving into canyons, landing on the surface and rolling out onto the surface in your SRV,” the press release reads.
Frontier is promising that the transition between space-based and planetary gameplay will be seamless when Planetary Landings launches towards the end of year, priced £39.99. Existing owners of Elite: Dangerous will receive a £10 loyalty discount at launch, as well as an exclusive Cobra Mk IV in-game spacecraft.
