Blizzard has been teasing the next expansion for Hearthstone.
PC Gamer‘s Tim Clark received a teaser in the post from the World of Warcraft and Starcraft developer which says to “mark July 22nd on your calendar.”
Interestingly, and probably coincidentally, July 22nd last year was the launch date of the first Hearthstone expansion: the singleplayer adventure Curse of Naxxramas.
The second expansion, Goblins vs Gnomes, launched in December of last year and added 123 new cards to the game; and the third and most recent expansion, Blackrock Mountain, launched back in April of this year and was another singleplayer affair. If the pattern holds, the latest expansion should be another major card set.
The announcement-of-an-announcement came in the form of a scroll, wrapped in ribbon and placed inside a cardboard tube which actually played a trumpet fanfare once opened. Written on the scroll was the following:
Champions are gathering from around the world to witness the next exciting thing Hearthstone has in store. News travels far and wide in search of brave new faces ready to answer the call to arms — Are you one of them? Muster for battle and mark July 22 on your calendar. The next bit of news won’t come by carrier pigeon — thankfully, we have much better ways of communication now. Victory awaits.
With a little luck, we might see some new modes or Heroes being added – the Monk and Death Knight are currently absent from the current roster; not that Hearthstone is exactly short of depth or strategy as it currently stands, as one player aptly demonstrated when he managed to make a single turn last over 40 hours earlier this year.
I reviewed Hearthstone shortly after its launch last year, and ended up awarding it our highest accolade – a rare 10/10. “Hearthstone may see Blizzard aiming at a more casual market, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time,” I wrote in conclusion to my Hearthstone review. “This is an utterly fantastic game that exudes polish from every digital pore. If you love card games, love Warcraft, or just love games in general, you owe it to yourself to play Hearthstone.
