Magicka: Wizard Wars has officially launched as of today, Paradox has announced. Previously, the game was in Early Access on Steam.
Wizard Wars is something of a departure for the series, being both free-to-play and focused on plaver-versus-player combat. You can download the game either via Steam or the official website, though you’ll need to register an account with Paradox in order to play.
The launch version of the game includes a new game mode called Soul Harvest, which turns the game into something akin to a MOBA, with AI creatures and monsters thrown into the mix as two teams of four players attempt to destroy their opponents’ effigy, as well as attempting to dodge friendly fire. Soul Harvest features no lanes, last-hit mechanics or character levelling – attempting to serve up an experience based purely around skill and reflexes, not stats.
Aside from Soul Harvest, players can engage in one-on-one duels and Wizard Warfare, which is a straightforward 4v4 deathmatch.
“Obviously the launch of a game is a momentous occasion, and it’s definitely a relief to have it officially out there after two years,” said David Nisshagen, Game Director for Magicka: Wizard Wars. “Our job is certainly not over yet, however. Our players have been with us every step of the way, supporting us, giving us crucial feedback, and helping us make a Magicka PvP experience that feels right. We couldn’t have gotten to this point without them, and now that we’ve launched, we’re going to stick by them to keep the game growing, evolving, and repeatedly setting everybody on fire in new and unexpected ways.”
To go along with the launch announcement, the publisher has released a new launch trailer which you can view below.
