While some may have been hoping for Wild Arms or Arc the Lad to make a triumphant return from the days of the PS2 JRPG, it turns out that Sony is more interested in Dark Chronicle, a venerated classic in the JRPG genre. As discovered by Trademark Bot, a Twitter account that takes into account these things, Sony recently filed the trademark with the Japanese Patent Office.
Here’s a translation of the trademark, that was filed on March 27th and has just been published on the Twitter account:
[Trademark Number 2014-23437]
Trademark: Dark Chronicle
Applicant (s): Sony Computer Entertainment
Filing Date: March 27, 2014
Nice Class: 9
While it’s certainly been a while since Dark Chronicle released (2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West as Dark Cloud 2), Sony seems to be interested in reviving the intellectual property in some capacity, as the original trademark expired in July of last year.
It’s impossible to know what Sony intends to do with the revived trademark, but an HD re-release on the PSN store doesn’t exactly seem to be out of the question given the recent resurgence of interest in the JRPG genre that so heavily defined the PS2 era of gaming.
For now, there’s no way to know what exactly Sony is up to here, but at the very least, the filing of the trademark indicates that Sony has a renewed interest both in Dark Chronicle and in the JRPG genre at large.
