Sony Layoffs Hit UK Based Studios

Sony layoffs

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the European branch of Sony Computer Entertainment, gave confirmation this morning that it has laid off an undisclosed number of staffers at three of its UK-based studios.

Speaking to VideoGamer, Sony revealed that staff at Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London Studio have all been affected by substantial layoffs. The three studios are still continuing development on Driveclub, Killzone: Mercenary and Singstar respectively, and Sony has assured consumers that the latest round of layoffs would not affect development on any of these titles.

Sony released the following statement regarding the unfortunate situation:

“We have reviewed and assessed all current projects and have decided to make some changes to some of our European Studios. As a result of this, there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.”

This news – which is always hard for members of the ever-dwindling AAA game developer community, comes right off the heels of the announcement of Sony’s ‘junk’ credit rating by Moody’s Investment Services due to their 10th year of being in the red financially. Sony CEO Kazuo Hirari has already announced that the company is expecting a $2.2 bn loss this year so in reality, these layoffs should not come as a surprise and should be seen as an extension of a cutting-cost initiative by Sony.

While it seems that these layoffs and more will likely be inevitable, it’s still always sad to see great game developers lose their jobs; even if it for the greater good of the mega-corporation.
